In my 25+ years of helping individuals, couples, and families, I have often witnessed how while illness, loss and other difficult life events may be crises that can bring about division and conflict, they can also foster greater openness and cohesion. My ongoing curiousity as to the various factors that foster cooperation and resilience, and intrigue in understanding interpersonal dynamics, are what led me to specialize in relationships.
Prior to entering privae practice, I was a social worker and clinical supervisor in a large NYC-based mental health clinic where I treated hundreds of individuals and families dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, bereavement, ADHD, divorce / separation / remarriage, and provided clinical supervision to graduate student interns and beginning therapists. I was also a consultant mediator for the Nassau County Family Court where I helped divorcing couples settle custody, visitation, and child support disputes.
I hold a BA in psychology and music from Binghamton University, an MS in clinical social work with a focus in organizational behavior and conflict resolution from Columbia University, and a doctorate in marriage and family from the University of Louisiana-Monroe.
Along with my formal education and training, in my 25+ years of clinical experience, I have seen that many of the issues we face are relational and systemic; meaning they are often heavily influenced by those whom we closest to, and depend on, whether family, friends, romantic partners, or co-workers. Family can provide necessary emotional sustenance but can at times be a significant source of stress. While we may not be able to directly change others, we do have a great deal of control over how we relate to them and our ability to develop the skills needed to foster healthy sustainable relationships.
That’s why in my practice I teach my clients to set and maintain the necessary boundaries which can improve relationships immeasurably. In addition, the ability to resolve conflict can have a profoundly positive impact; an essential skill set for these stressful and divided times we live in. Therapy is a valuable part of this process, and I will work with you in addressing these concerns and building satisfying and meaningful relationships.
